The Tour of Guangxi got underway on Tuesday with a bunch sprint in Chongzuo; having set off on a breakaway, Jamie Meehan was unable to catch up with the leading trio. With Piet Allegaert out of the race following a crash in the final stages, Milan Fretin found himself boxed in by the peloton, unable to find a gap, and finished 18th.
The reaction
Benjamin Giraud, sporting director:
“First reports from China following the opening stage of the Tour of Guangxi, which unfortunately did not go as we would have liked. A breakaway of three riders formed, and we tried to be part of it with Jamie Meehan. Unfortunately, he spent some time on the counter-attack and was unable to get back to the front to claim the time bonuses.
Behind them, the peloton was controlled all day by the sprinters’ teams. The bunch sprint was predictable, but we were hampered by a crash in the final stretch, which took out Piet Allegaert, thereby reducing our chances. Milan found himself boxed in and was unable to sprint as he would have liked. We’re heading into today’s stage in 18th place.”
