Louis Hubert, Eliott Pierre, Arthur Bauchet and Gatien Le Rousseau will compete at the World Para-cycling Championships this weekend, with understandably high ambitions.
In Huntsville, some are looking to return to the Moon, while others have their sights set on the rainbow jerseys. It is in this American city, home to NASA and the spacecraft of the Artemis programme, that the World Para-cycling Championships will take place. Three of our riders have been selected to represent France, in both the time trial and road race.
The time trial will get things underway, with a fast 14.6-kilometre course around Cummings Research Park. The road races will then take place on Sunday and Monday nights, French time.
Gatien Le Rousseau has already had the privilege of wearing the rainbow jersey for an entire year. The young Breton burst onto the scene two years ago, claiming two impressive silver and bronze medals at the Paris Paralympic Games. A few weeks later, he won his first world road title on the streets of Zurich. After suffering a serious crash and fracturing his jaw in May, the track specialist took the time he needed to recover. Now back at his best, he is ready to shine once again.
Arthur Bauchet has already reached the pinnacle of his sporting career, with five Paralympic titles in skiing. The athlete who took on the crazy challenge of excelling in two disciplines is well on his way to achieving his goal. This season, he has won two World Cup time trials. Last June, he became European time trial champion and finished second in the road race. At 25, our rider-skier looks better equipped than ever to claim another international podium. He certainly has every reason to be ambitious ahead of tonight’s start, as he competes in the same category as Alexandre Leauté (C2).
Louis Hubert is just 19, yet he is already emerging as one of the future stars of the sport. Last year, the young Breton claimed an impressive silver medal in the World Championship time trial. But this season, his progress has been phenomenal for the rider from Plélan-le-Petit (Côtes-d’Armor). Put simply, Louis Hubert has dominated the World Cup: victories in five of the six rounds, and naturally, the overall C3 classification. Last June, he donned the European champion’s star-spangled jersey in both the time trial and road race. Now it’s time to swap the stars for the rainbow…
A year after making his debut, Eliott Pierre is making his return to the World Para-cycling Championships. After a season defined by learning and gaining experience, the young rider from Besançon will head into the Worlds with no shortage of ambition. Having stepped onto the podium last year on his debut in the sport, he will naturally be aiming for another international medal.
