The Vuelta a Burgos concluded this Saturday after a challenging final stage. The Cofidis team can look back on a positive week in Spain, thanks in large part to Jamie Meehan’s consistent performance.

The Irishman, however, had a difficult start to the day. Caught up in a crash just two kilometers into the stage, Jamie Meehan had to fight to regain his place in the peloton before continuing his effort to stay in contact with the leaders.

He ultimately finished 22nd on the stage—a solid result given the circumstances and the particularly high caliber of the field assembled for this Vuelta a Burgos. Above all, this performance allowed him to hold onto his 14th-place finish in the final general classification. Cofidis thus leaves Burgos with a rider in the top 15 of the general classification, following a week in which the team was consistently among the front-runners.

The reaction

Gorka Gerrikagoitia: “It was a short, fast, and tough stage with a finish at Lagunas de Neila—the usual finish here. We wanted to be part of the breakaway, but it just wasn’t our day. We got caught up in a crash at the 2-kilometer mark: Jamie Meehan, Alexis Renard, and Sergio Samitier. Jamie had to switch bikes and stayed in the car column for 35 km. He expended a lot of energy and was suffering from back pain. He finished like a warrior to take 22nd place on the stage and hold onto his 14th place overall. It’s a great result given the level of competition here.”
