The second stage of the Vuelta a Burgos offered the first real test for the general classification contenders. The riders found themselves at the base of a final climb measuring 3.4 kilometers with an average gradient of 7.7%, ideal terrain for puncheurs and climbers and the first breakaways.
After a day controlled by the peloton, the race came down to the final climb. The pace set by the favorites’ teams quickly whittled down the leading group, before the first attacks began among the general classification contenders. In these demanding conditions, Jamie Meehan finished 30th on the stage at a particularly selective finish.
The reaction
Gorka Gerrikagoitia:
“We didn’t want to go into the breakaway. The team’s goal was to put Dylan Teuns and Jamie Meehan in the best possible position for the final climb. The level of competition was very high yesterday, as I said. Jamie finished 30th—it’s a shame because he got dropped a bit.”
