At the Muur Classic Geraardsbergen, the Cofidis team played the cards they had in hand. Unlucky after Clément Izquierdo’s early withdrawal, they tried to take the initiative with Dylan Teuns in the final stretch. At the finish, Edoardo Zampérini finished 14th.
The reaction
Sébastien Demarbaix, sports director:
"We had a pretty fast start, followed by a breakaway that built up a maximum lead of 2 minutes before it came down to a sprint finish with about 60 riders. Unfortunately, after 100 km, we lost Clément Izquierdo to a crash at the foot of the Mur. We were down to just four riders with 80 km to go. It was still a bit of a setback, but we saw a very strong, well-knit team.
We rode well together. The plan was executed as intended, since we had Dylan Teus who was truly free to ride his own race on the final climb of the Mur and also on the last hill before the finish. He showed he was in great shape. He broke away on the final climb with Berckmoes. They had a lead of up to 8 or 9 seconds and were caught in the final kilometer.
This is very encouraging for Dylan looking ahead to next week, particularly at the Tour of Belgium. We had Edoardo Zampérini as our designated leader to secure a spot in the sprint. He’s someone who knows how to fight his way through the pack and claim his position. He didn’t have a bad sprint, but he was very frustrated because the team worked hard for him, especially Camille Charret, as usual. Sylvain Moniquet also did a great job, particularly for Dylan before he attacked.
Once again, we had more than four riders with two hours to go, but all four fulfilled their roles completely. There isn’t much else to say. We didn’t get a result. We knew the team composition had been completely shaken up after Stanislaw Aniolkowski’s crash last week. We saw a great team today. I think the guys who were here will do well in their next races."
