The Tour of Turkey’s queen stage took place this Friday, May 1, between Antalya and Feslikan. After a completely flat first half of the race, a 21.4-km climb with an 8.3% gradient awaited our riders for the day’s finale. After hanging on with the leaders for as long as possible, Sergio Samitier finished 21st in this 6th stage. He moves up to 20th place overall.
The reaction
Gorka Gerrikagoitia, sports director:
This is a stage with a flat first section of 110 kilometers and a final climb of nearly 22 kilometers. There was quite a bit of fatigue in the team this morning. Even so, we tried to do our best with the climbers today. The plan was to stay together, make it to the final climb, and try to put in the best performance on the ascent with Sergio Samitier, Sylvain Moniquet, and Emanuel Buchmann.
But just like the other day, I don’t think we were up to par today either. Sergio was the team’s best performer; he finished 21st in the stage. So there’s not much to say.
The other riders are in better shape, and we couldn’t have done any more. Sergio gave it his all, and so did Sylvain. Emanuel, with the pain he’s in, couldn’t have done any more.
As for the other riders on the team, we were thinking more about tomorrow’s stage—saving a little energy. We’re hoping it ends in a sprint. "
