As the defending team thanks to Milan Fretin’s victory last year, Cofidis lined up at the Ronde van Limburg without its outgoing winner, who was sidelined after a crash at the Scheldeprijs that resulted in a fractured elbow. On this classic expected to suit sprinters, the team once again delivered a solid performance.
Starting from Hasselt, riders faced 179 kilometres to Tongeren. A course that looked set for the sprinters, despite several climbs and cobbled sectors that animated the race. As often, attacks came throughout the day but the peloton regrouped towards the finish. The bunch arrived together for a sprint on a slight uphill drag. Stanisław Aniołkowski took 6th place at the line.
Sports director’s reaction, Sébastien Demarbaix:
“With a reduced line-up of five riders, we started the race without particular pressure, but with the ambition to aim for a top 5, or even better, depending on Stan’s freshness and recovery after Roubaix.
We stayed in the second part of the peloton until around 20 kilometres to go. Nicolas Debeaumarché, who was unwell, did not finish the race. Camille Charret stayed with Stan for a large part of the race.
In the final, we followed the moves with Clément Izquierdo and Valentin Ferron, while trying to position Stan in the last two to three kilometres. He launched his sprint a bit too early, but managed to come back to take another solid result.
We can be satisfied with our day.
