He has racked up a string of podium finishes since the start of the season. Alex Aranburu narrowly missed out on victory at the Figueira Champions Classic (2nd), at the Ruta del Sol (6th overall) and secured an impressive 12th place at Milan–Sanremo. On home soil, during a Tour of the Basque Country where he will ride along the roads of his childhood, he has just one goal: to win, just like last year. A chat with a determined rider.

My passion for cycling

“When I was little, I played several sports – cycling, football and even Basque pelota. Then, gradually, I started to prefer cycling. No one in my family competed at a high level, but I enjoyed it and wanted to keep going. Later on, I was lucky enough to quickly benefit from the advice of Ion and Gorka Izagirre, who were riding for the same club as me!”

What I love most.

“What’s brilliant about cycling is the feeling of freedom. Most of the time, you suffer on the bike because you’re always pushing yourself to give your best. But sometimes, at the end of a long ride, you cycle along the coast, stop for a coffee with friends and family… I really enjoy those moments of calm and togetherness that you can experience on certain rest days or at the end of the season.”

My start to the season.

“I’m really pleased with my results since the start of the year. It’s true that I’ve had some good results in Portugal (2nd in the Figueira Champions Classic), at the Ruta del Sur (3rd and twice 4th, 6th overall), at the Drôme Classic (8th) and at Milan–Sanremo (12th). We’ve had a great pre-season and I feel in good shape!”

My goals for the Tour of the Basque Country.

“It’s always a very special race because we’re coming home. The standard will be very high this year, but I’m sure we’re good enough to aim for stage wins and a strong position in the general classification with Ion Izagirre.”

My passions outside cycling.

“I really enjoy the simple pleasures: being at home with my family, going for walks in the mountains with my dogs. In Andorra, where I live, or in the Basque Country, there’s plenty to do when it comes to walks and hikes!”

My favourite place to train.

“In the Basque Country, of course! I really love the coast, especially when the weather’s fine in summer. There are several villages west of San Sebastian that are absolutely stunning, with the road winding close to the Atlantic: Zarautz, Zumaia, Getaria… It’s truly magnificent!”
