This was only the second time in history that the Milan-Sanremo race was held for women. On the schedule: a 156-km race between Genoa and San Remo, contested at a blistering pace.

The Cofidis riders waited until the end of the race to shine. The tight-knit team was spotted at the front of the peloton about thirty kilometers from the finish. Then it was Noskova’s show! She managed to stay with the lead group as the pace picked up. And then she took her chance on the Poggio, launching a fierce attack that put her in the lead for a few minutes in this prestigious race. “The atmosphere was indescribable; it motivated me like never before,” she confided at the finish.

In the final stretch, it was Amalie Dideriksen who stood out. In the sprint among the chasers, the Dane slipped through and took 15th place. A competitor through and through, she didn’t hide her “slight disappointment at the finish.” Still, the former world champion finished in the “top 20” for the fourth time since the start of the season. And she assures us: she’s already looking forward to coming back next year to do better.

Reactions

Nikola Noskova: “The whole race was really tough for me; it was very hard to maintain the right pace. I had to switch bikes and I wasn’t really sure what I could do at the end of the race. After getting over the Cipressa in the first group, I knew I didn’t stand a chance if it came down to a sprint. So I told myself I could try something. So I went for it; I attacked on the Poggio. The atmosphere was indescribable—it motivated me like never before. I wish the climb had been longer so I could’ve stayed in the lead longer. But anyway, I’m really happy to be the only one who tried an attack on the Poggio!”

Amalie Dideriksen: “ I’m obviously a little disappointed because I’m sure I could have done a little better. I did my best and I’m happy to have made it back after the Cipressa. With the fatigue, I had a hard time finding my rhythm in the final stretch. It’s still a great performance; it shows that I’ve worked really hard this winter. But I’m really looking forward to coming back next year to do better.”
