The Basque rider, who arrived this season, will continue to ride for Cofidis for the next two seasons. An experienced rider who has already won the Tour de France, Ion Izagirre contributes to the team's performance in stage races. And he does not intend to stop there!
He quickly integrated himself into the Cofidis team. Discreet, focused and conscientious, Ion Izagirre is one of the team's major elements. At 33 years old, the Basque rider has brought his experience, his knowledge of racing and his know-how to the team. His integration has been successful and fast and he has quickly taken on the role of leader in the stage races. Winner of 16 races as a professional, Spanish road champion (2014) and Spanish time trial champion (2021), Ion has impressed with his consistency at the highest level throughout the season.
6th of the general classification of Gran Camino in February, 7th of Paris-Nice in March, he had notably distinguished himself in April by winning the 6th and last stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, between Eibar and Arrate. He concluded this Tour "on home ground" by taking 2nd place overall behind Daniel Felipe Martinez. While he is riding his first Tour de France for Cofidis, he is one of the two riders of the team, together with Simon Geschke, to have experienced the joys of a victory in the Grande Boucle. His victory was in Morzine in 2016. Ion hopes to share his experience with all his team-mates and dreams of raising his arms again on the French roads.
