At the age of 22, the Portuguese rider was training with Hagens Berman Axeon team, as were Joao Almeida, Jasper Stuyven and Jasper Philipsen. Andre Carvalho aspires to continue his progression in the most prestigious races of the cycling world together with the Cofidis team, whom he has just signed a one-season contract with.
For the first time in its history, Cofidis team welcomes a Portuguese rider, one of the most talented of his generation: Andre Carvalho. It is a choice as strong as symbolic for Cofidis, which is strongly established in Portugal and supports among others the Volta ao Algarve.
Andre Carvalho, an ambitious puncher
Andre Carvalho, 22 years old, is originally from Vila Nova de Famalicão, north of Porto where he made his first steps in the Hagens Berman Axeon team. The training course led by Axel Merckx is famous for being a nursery for young talent. The list of riders who have come out of it and who now shine includes Joao Almeida, Jasper Stuyven, Ruben Guerreiro or Tao Geoghegan Hart.
Andre Carvalho, who defines himself as a puncher, has proven his ease in one-day races by taking 5th places in Paris-Roubaix Espoirs and Liège-Bastogne-Liège Espoirs two years ago. The young rider wishes to continue this progress and hopefully reach new heights in the nearest future by taking part in the UCI World Tour.
THEY SAID...
ANDRE CARVALHO: "
For me, it's a dream come true. I am very happy to join the Cofidis team and I can't wait to meet my future team-mates and to evolve with my new colors. Back in Hagens Berman Axeon, I had the chance to compete with riders who shine today.
It pushed me to give my very best and work hard to progress. I like to describe myself as a puncher, a rider who likes to make a difference in day races. I am very proud to race alongside riders of great talent like Guillaume Martin and Elia Viviani. I can't wait for the new season to begin!"
CÉDRIC VASSEUR, general manager: "
We are very proud to welcome Andre Carvalho to the team next season. Andre has been trained in a structure where many young riders have already proven themselves. It is a great opportunity to give such a promising rider his chance and we can only rejoice at his arrival. This reinforcement confirms even more the support of Cofidis to the Portuguese cycling that is currently flourishing at the highest level".
