In particularly tricky conditions on the wet slopes of Etna, the Cofidis riders managed to keep their pace. All of them already have in mind tomorrow's stage, which should bring a smile to the sprinters and thus to the Italian duo of Cofidis, Elia Viviani and Simone Consonni.
An air of chaos floated on this third stage and not only because it ended on the tough slopes of Mount Etna. After the strong wind in Palermo on Saturday, the heat on Sunday, the weather conditions remained tough on Monday with rain at the end of the stage.
But this didn't prevent Stéphane Rossetto from making a counter-attack before the final climb, whereas he was caught again by the peloton. Nevertheless, he finishes best Frenchman of this stage, in 27th position. His team-mates made the best they could, as the tempo was accelerating strongly in the front of the race.
Tomorrow: a climb before the massive sprint
Since it is a big Tour, the focus is already on the next stage. Tomorrow, on the last day in Sicily between Catania and Villafranca Tirrena (140 km), the Cofidis team will have a tough battle on its hands.
Of course, they will have to manage to stay in the good tempo despite a 3rd category climb in the middle of the stage (Portella Mandrazzi, km 75,4). But then, the end of the stage promises a big and challenging sprint. In the sprint, the two inseparable Italians, Elia Viviani and Simone Consonni, will do everything they can to bring the Cofidis' colors to the top.
